How to Duplicate Page or Post in WordPress

Having the ability to duplicate pages and posts on a Wordpress website can save you a lot of time developing pages. Here are your options to doing it.

There will be a time in managing your WordPress blog that you want to carry over all the things you did on a page or post to a new draft so you have something to start with rather than starting with a blank page or post.

How wonderful would it be to have an option that you can simply click on to duplicate a page in WordPress. Well, there is!

Why duplicate a page or post in WordPress

Being able to duplicate a page or post in WordPress easily would save you a time in developing a page. This is particularly useful in cases wherein you’ve used a page builder to design a page or post and that it would be cumbersome if you start from a blank page again should you want to have a similarly looking page you previously designed.

Another use case of having the ability to duplicate a post is when you’ve ready a page template that you can just duplicate to a new draft every time you need it. I, for one, is doing this all the time to help me save a ton of time in creating similarly themed pages.

How to duplicate a page or post in WordPress using a plugin

The easiest route to duplicating a page in WordPress is to make use of a plugin that would give you an option to clone or copy a page.

There are many plugins that come to mind when it comes to dealing with this, but if you’re interested in which plugin I use to do this job then that would be the “Yoast Duplicate Post” plugin.

How to duplicate a page with Yoast Duplicate Post plugin

It is a very straightforward process should you choose to do this way of duplicating posts and pages on your WordPress website.

Below are the steps on how to do so:

  • In your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Plugins -> Add New
  • In the “Search plugins” field accessible near the top-right corner, type in “Yoast Duplicate Post” and enter
  • Look for Yoast Duplicate Post from the list
  • Normally you would see an “Install Now” button instead of “Active” when you haven’t activated the plugin yet. So, go ahead and click on install and then activate the plugin.
  • One activated, you can navigate to either Posts or Pages and locate a Title you want to duplicate.
  • Hovering on an entry, you would notice a list of options that include “Clone” and “New Draft”. You can use one of these options to execute a duplicate page command – doing so should bring up the Edit Page window with the copied page.

How to duplicate a page or post in WordPress without a plugin

So you want to save your WordPress website from using yet another plugin to solve a problem. That’s great! The less plugin you install and activate, the lighter your WordPress will be.

But is there a way to duplicate a page or post in WordPress without using a plugin? Yes, there is! Though it just require a little more tinkering.

Here’s how to duplicate a page without a plugin:

  • Look for the page or post you want to duplicate and open its Edit window.
  • In the top-right corner of the Edit window, click on Options (represented by 3 vertical dots) to bring up the Options panel.
  • In the Options panel, under Tools section, look for “Copy all content” option. Click on it to execute a copy command of all contents of the page or post you are currently editing.
  • Then, proceed to adding a new page or post. Give it Title as usual.
  • On the first block available, right-click and then Paste to copy over the contents you copied from another page.

If you have executed the steps correctly, you should have all the contents copied over in the new page your are creating.

Please note that the above option may not be available in every WordPress install and in every theme or page builder being used. In the case of the above showcase, the website is using WordPress 6.0.1 on a Bootstrap based theme with Gutenberg and Ultimate Addons for Gutenberg as the page builder combo.

Should your WordPress install doesn’t have the option as directed, consider using a plugin to give you the ability to duplicate posts and pages like the one mentioned in this article.
